The Trouble with Goodbyes...
Know anybody who's going through the empty nest blues? I find myself there, so this

The Kids Are Alright....
THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT...No,
I’m not about to give you a movie review…I’m talking about the “kids” I’ve been hearing
on Americana stages and cutting records and doing their musical mentors proud. This
week’s show opens with four young groups that include members ranging from middle school age to twenty-somethings.
The Farewell Drifters, Jubal’s Kin, The New 76ers, and Sarah Jarosz. After hearing them, I
think you’ll agree that we can only be excited about the future of Americana/Roots music… Also, listen up for Americana chart toppers,
and songs about a musician’s best friend---his/her instrument… Check the events page for information about the Mayhaw Palooza—a big sendoff for Mayhaws band member Carrie Hamby, who’ll be leaving the band for a year or so
to work on a project in Virginia. I'll be emceeing the event! Miss the show? Or just miss me? Look over to
the right and listen to the media player for the latest show…. See you next Sunday on the radio!

Drunken Angel
This week's show focuses on an artist that I call the "Van Gogh" of
singer/songwriters. Hardcore Americana/Roots fans are familiar, but the general music loving public may
have missed out on the heart-wringing, funny-bone tickling, politico poking tunes of Texas cowboy poet Blaze Foley.
Why the mention of Van Gogh? Like the famous artist, Foley's work was not widely known until long after
his violent death, murdered in 1989 in a conflict defending a friend.
Blaze Foley lived an unusual and difficult
life, mostly by his own choosing. Struggled with inner demons, but was known for his kindness. Called the venues
where he played home, and that was mostly true.
Close friend and musical cohort Gurf Morlix was with Blaze the night the masters of his record, Cold, Cold World were stolen from his car, with
no known backups available.
Morlix was with him again the afternoon Foley had dug up at least a rough cassete
recording of the songs. and Blaze hit the wrong button and erased a great portion of it.
Happily--a master tape
of Cold, Cold World was found and offered to Gurf Morlix, who released it last year through Lost Art Records. Gurf also plans to make a record of himself covering some of Foley's tunes, expected
out next year. More of Foley's own recordings have just been released by Lost Arts, an album called Sittin' by
the Road.
Fat Possum Records has also released a recording of lost Foley tunes called Blaze
Foley: The Dawg Years.
John Prine, Merle Haggard, Towns Van Zandt, and Willie Nelson are just a few of the
artists that have recorded Blaze Foley's songs.
Lucinda Williams poignant ballad Drunken Angel was
written as a tribute to Blaze Foley.
Also on this weeks show are Americana chart toppers, and highlights of my
summer of live music.
Thanks for "tunin' in!"
